Description
This painting was painted on site in the late morning in one session. Bass Harbor Head Light of Maine. This lighthouse is to me one of my most favorite places to be in Maine. The paintings foreground is of a steep granite cliff leading up to the lighthouse. The Maine shore is covered with pink granite and its great fun to paint. The cliff gives way to a soft grassy hill with a patch of sea roses on the left side and thick pines on the right side. In the upper middle is the light its self. It is always on and glows red. The house and tower are painted white with a dark red roof. To the left of the tower is a gated walk way leading to the bell that can be plainly seen on its white concrete platform. Behind the bell and the lighthouse are more distant pines and a calm blue summer sky with billowing white clouds. Acadia National park has a lot to offer but this scene is to me one of the best ones. You can hear the buoy bells, the motors of the lobster boats, the fog horns, sea birds, and the wind through the trees.
